Man Utd have made many big money signings who haven't turned out as well as could be expected-a difference being most people had heard of the players in question and they were know for being at least half decent rather than unknown!

Alexis Sánchez (2018, swap deal equivalent to over £30 million)
Donny van de Beek (£35 million, 2020)
Harry Maguire (£80 million, 2019)
Paul Pogba (£89 million, 2016)
Angel Di María (£59.7 million, 2014)
Romelu Lukaku (£75 million, 2017)
Jadon Sancho (£73 million, 2021)
Memphis Depay (£25 million, 2015)

So its not that we'er buying relative unknowns that don't seem to work, its that not all transfers, for however much they cost, are going to work out.
