Does anyone else feel like the internet is miasmic?

I keep getting frustrated with myself for constantly checking BBC News, Twitter, and other sites, so I try to put my phone down. But then I check into a hotel and find I need a smartphone for everything. Same with my bank—they send verification codes to my phone when I want to log in. Even the book I’m reading has links to extra online content that goes with what I’ve paid for. I spend so much time online, and despite trying to be aware of it, I end up feeling frustrated and unproductive compared to when I was eighteen, just going for long walks and listening to a single album without being able to easily skip tracks or change the artist. I don’t think I’d love music in the same way if I came of age today. Long walks with detailed examinations of lyrics mean that I still go back to the same songs as always, even though I try to listen to new artists. It really feels like the internet has messed with our lives. Were we actually happier back then?
