never played the game. he went to a public school where football was frowned upon, but was schooled in journalism at his local rag and had a deep rooted love of the game. got his break at the newcastle hereford fa cup game and was a bloody nice bloke to boot and obsessed with the game. one of the best uk comms of all time. if only he had played the game at the top level then he really could have carved a decent career out of it.
