In defence of the media

It is a huge story, what with it being the Titanic and all. It's also become an opportunity for some to make a political/class point which has added another storyline to it.

Until they found hard evidence there was always chance, however slim, of a successful/ heroic outcome a la Thai caves, people who get found alive in earthquake rubble way past the expected survival time, Tony Bullimore- the sailor who lasted 5 days in an upturned sailing boat. It's a good job they carried on searching for him when most thought he'd perished.

We're humans. We love a good survival against the odds story. It distracts us from our fragile grip on this life!
