rarely get an opportunity (for want of a more tasteful word) to put their operations into a real life scenario like that, and until physical evidence of wreckage is found no one knew for absolute certainty what had happened.

So why not keep searching while the breathable oxygen window still existed?

There are bangs and noises heard in the oceans all the time.
