Maintaining it is the problem
Most promoted teams seem to have good first seasons- playing way above ‘their level’, fighting for their lives- I think it’s fair to say we did so in the first Lambert PL season. But so often, the ‘grind’ of trying to stay competitive in season 2 wears clubs down (see Sheffield Utd, Huddersfield and possibly, hopefully, Leeds this season). Part of our problem this season is that we’re ‘damaged goods’, the managerial team, owners etc have been through it before and have seemingly resigned ourselves to our fate.

- Farke specifically said similar. Defensive teams struggle second season if they survive. (NCFC) - trafford_canary, Oct 26, 10:06:22
