Despite being a very infrequent visitor to my GP they did send me the covid letter, but this was after I had proactively booked online.

If you try to book online once a week you will not inconvenience your GP but should, in theory, get a booking as soon as you are eligible.

There are lots of stories about vaccine centres dishing out 'spare' doses to passers-by.
