30k deaths during a severe flu epidemic = not worthy of any precautions. While possibly hundreds of thousands of deaths = isolate everyone for months.

Where is the line drawn between the scenarios? It is all about balancing risk against over-mitigating, and where the line is drawn will be very different for different people. I think calling people selfish for not reacting how you think is most appropriate is ridiculous. If they were breaking a government imposed lockdown aimed at eradicating the virus, that would be different - because then it would be a legal issue. Right now though, there is no such thing in place in the UK.
