not that it will help your present situation , but once you have have resolved that
before you put the radiator back on the wall you install a couple of service valves in the pipe going to and from the rad and also a rad valve with drain cock then next time you want to decorate behind it all you do is close the valves either end open the drain cock , drain rad and then remove the rad
i did this to all my rads as i decorated my current house saves a lot of hassle down the years
