It would be fairly simple for DJI or [insert manufacturer] to push an update...

which would ground their drones until the owner registered it officially. Now of course there would be people who would avoid being connected to WiFi if they knew it was coming but for the most part people would do it.

I use drones daily in my work for scanning and mapping pit walls, pit inspections and so on and I can confirm that DJI are mission specialists at grounding my drone without even trying. Hell they even ground it from time to time if you don’t complete the updates.
