Great post.
I've been off Facebook and Twitter all year and feel much the better for it. They are sociopathic, misanthropic platforms and great examples of how well-meaning good people with cool ideas can end up creating monstrosities without meaning or wanting to.
I do still follow the news but I wish I didn't. I don't like the world very much at the minute. There is so much intolerance - there seems to be no middle ground anywhere and a lot of anger and hatred. The default response to anyone's view on anything is ad-hominem, and we are ruled by Dunning-Kruger, or we seem to be. Every decision taken anywhere by anyone is "obviously stupid", according to everyone else. There is neither nuance nor the recognition of the need to develop arguments and positions - let's just jump straight to the TLDR and take person A's belief/gut feel with the same seriousness as person B's expertise developed over decades and not years. Gratification must be instant and constant; impossible, unrealistic standards of beauty and behaviour are held up as the norms to which our kids should aspire and no wonder they feel they fall short (or maybe the rise in DSH among teen girls in particular is for some different reason, I don't know: girls always had it harder than boys but the technology really amplifies that).
And modern music is s**t. Except some of it.
I find turning it all off and opening a bottle of gin helps.
