I appreciate the irony of me posting this on an internet messageboard but
As I peruse the various news websites over my lunch and read more of the very sad Alfie Evans saga (with idiot Americans now wading in more and more) coupled with more Brexit debate nonsense and a sprinkling of labour anti semitism scandal I cannot help but think that one of the single most destructive/angst causing/unfortunate developments in our society has been social media and 24 hour news.
Everyone is angry at everything and are generally being unpleasant to each other, people are being manipulated left right and centre, people don;t accept the outcomes of elections are protesting outside children's hospitals over medical cases they know nothing about. Everyone has deeply entrenched views on subjects based on having read a few tweets from individuals who often themselves don't know what they are talking about. The whole country just feels so angry and destructive when you look at it through the media window.
Meanwhile we have the president of the most powerful nation of earth communicating with foreign dictators and at times almost threatening WW3 almost entirely by tweets a 10 year old could have composed.
And in the middle of it all our media, essentially creating stories where none exist or seizing on a 2 line tweet and turning it into an political crisis due to their rabid need to fill 24 hour news stations with something worth reporting.
Profoundly depressing and I don;t know how we step back from it. I'm certainly thinking of ditching face book and twitter for some peace of mind but generally we seem to have already crossed a line. Ignorance is perhaps bliss.
