If he thought he'd been fouled, should have raised merry hell immediately afterwards too. Get the crowd fired up, give the referee and a problem and make him think he's missed something. All a bit half hearted, trying to extract himself, and then the complaint afterwards.

(All IMHO of course, and having moved on already)
