what do you suggest then?

when you say people like that should be 'listened to' what do you mean? You can listen to them all you like but the only correct response after listening to them would then be to explain to them that they are ridiculously irrational and wrong. And then they'd still say that you weren't listening to them becasue you weren't acting.

How do you convince them that you ARE listening when you can't act on it because their fears are so irrational and ill-informed? If you are going to implement policy on the basis of such stupid fears you don't deserve to have any power (this is clearly true of some politicians)
