Yes they should.

Let's remember that the goal for this season is to finish top half and we were in the top 20 spenders in European football this summer. Villa have spent much less than us, that should be a game we expect to win.

As I have said before, people forget that a football season is not a means to an end. It's not about grinding out enough tight wins against lower teams to get to an acceptable finish. If your not going to bother showing up against any of the top teams then what is the point of being in the Prem, does beating Palace and West Ham really mean any more than it would beating Leeds and Forest. Also, talking about our regular beatings, let's not forget United away, given all the problems they are having this season, to show up and surrender the game with no fight at all was pretty appalling in a competition we should be looking to win. We aren't getting good enough results at the moment to finish top half and we aren't playing good football, so how has this season been up to expectations in any way as yet?

To pick up on a couple of other points in the thread, we were not solely a counter attacking side under Lambert, we often tried to keep the ball so what you were thinking of there was having more than one way to play, not being only a counter attacking team. And as for how far can counter attacking teams go, have a look at Dortmund in recent years. Also, how people keep banging on about 1-3 and 4-1 loses like they were something to be proud of I don't know. We were never in any danger of getting a result at Arsenal, they were happy for us to have the ball in the middle third, we did nothing with it, that does not constitute a good performance. Against Chelsea there was 15 minutes or so where we looked like we could get a result, for the rest of the game Chelsea were in control. We don't have a style of play with which we can regularly impose ourselves on any good side.
