You may as well try it with a sim, nothing's bad is going to happen

If it rejects the sim, they'll be a shop in town, or even on Norwich market where a guy will have all the data cables to unlock it for you. It will cost about tenner

He can remove branding off it as well, which will mean loads of locked apps that run in the background won't clog up the phone's ram (which lets be honest, Orange is crammed full of them, and you wouldn't mind if any of the apps were any good, but most of them are s**te)
