What we have to realise, whether it's palatable or not, is that we are not a big club and neither do we have any money. That means the four Gunn salute is basically all we can afford, regardless of the merit of it all, because a Boothroyd or an Ince would probably have wanted to rip the squad up again - something we cannot afford to do, unfortunately.
So in that sense getting a big personality like Gunny in hopefully helps us do the best with what we've got. I think that he's going to struggle tactically though and this is basically an admission that we're lurching from season to season in the hope that somehow something clicks. There is no natural current running through the club anymore, no youth team players coming through, no Norwich City passing game handed down through the decades.
The shower of s**te Worthy, Grant and Roeder in turn left us with has got progressively worse each time. The only way it will click is with a) new ownership and or b) some good players coming through from the academy.
You have to hope that because Gunny actually cares about the club he's going to fast-track a couple of them, and bring Spillane and Martin back (if he can).
But the problem is much greater than appointing a manager with zero experience as we struggle for survival. It's to do with a board who I have no doubt want the best for Norwich City but have completely run out of ideas, energy - and money - to achieve that. So they go for the popular sentimental choice which buys them some more time and goodwill. And most importantly, buys them a whole load of season tickets as the 'we've got our norwich back' feelings sweep carrow road once again.
Naturally I hope Bryan Gunn is a huge success. But he has a lot to learn, and fast.
Win against Southampton and it all starts looking a little better through the yellow and green tinted specs, but sign nobody before the end of the transfer window and that long tough run of games might leave us looking down the abyss once more.
