Don't you get it?

He says he's fed up with the game, so then everyone gets all worked up because they think he's going to quit, thus assuaging his ego ('DON'T QUIT RONNIE!'). He might not have a great passion for the game, but what does that matter? Many footballers are the same and can't wait to get out of it. He's just got a talent that he's turning to his considerable financial advantage. Which is why he's not about to quit.
