"In September he attempted to kayak from Svalbard, across the Arctic Ocean, towards the North Pole to further highlight the melting sea ice. The expedition coincided with some scientists predicting that the North Pole could be free of sea-ice for the first time this summer[1]; however, Pugh was forced to abandon his planned 745-mile trip about 500 miles from the North Pole due to ice."
