Who wants pretty football?

Beautiful passing football, as I believe is Roeder's ideal, is all well and good, but it seems to me that in this league route one is a much more reliable strategy (unless you've got talent like McFadden at your disposal). I think we should swallow our principles and go with what will work rather than what will look good. I'd certainly prefer a team in the vein of Watford 05/06, getting results at the expense of pretty football, to what we've tried to do for the last few seasons. Another point - understandably the focus currently seems to be on finding a new striker. I can't help but postulate that we're in equally dire need of a decent defender, because at the moment we're at sixes and ruddy sevens. Perhaps Grounds is the answer; I don't know, I wasn't there on Saturday. What I can say is that we have the third worst defence in the division, and I think everyone will agree that a good team is built upon a solid defence. Trying to score more than your ship is not sustainable - the emphasis should be on keeping them out in the first place.
