I went to a load of World War I battlesites and graveyards on a school trip once.

The oldest guy to die in World War I was from my home town. He wanted to have a cavalry unit. For No Man's Land. The British Army told him that if he wanted one, he'd have to get it together himself. So he did, and he promptly got shot to ribbons, along with his horse.
