So it turned out that LoveFilm had actually sent me the right film in the wrong jacket and I WAS able to watch Full Metal Jacket after all. Back on schedule.
Really enjoyed that one; well, two thirds of it anyway. First bit in their basic training was absolutely excellent. I loved the drill sergeant; I've had two coaches like him only cockernees rather than Merkins but same attitude. Excellent, unexpected, brilliantly paced, very funny in places. Was sorry when Pile topped the serge, thought that was a bit unrealistic.
Next bit was a bit filler-esque
Final prolonged sequence where they get pinned down by the sniper was a great piece of cinema; conveyed the confusion and fear of war with real power. And the sheer luck of it, where your life depends on tiny chances of angle and distance.
Ended too soon for me, I wanted it to go on.
Tomorrow we have Blade Runner: the Director's Cut and Bulletproof Monk.
