plus going to gym a few times a week for marathon running (done 3 this year) but it is more about getting a mix of sessions.
the minimum for a reasonable marathon is a session of sprints a week (helps build leg muscle strength and speed), a long run that gradually gets longer each few weeks, getting to about 20 odd miles (helps developmnt stamina and get you round) in length and another run a week (for general training). there are some good training guides on runners world web site if that helps?
