I had the same problem a few years ago....

I bank withthe Halifax and I paid about £30 for them to do a "Special Presentation" of the draft through the bank clearing system. It takes about four days but you get it in writing from the bank that the draft has cleared and the money is yours. Then you hand the keys over. Means the buyer parts with his cash four days before getting the car but thats the only way to protect yourself.
