What he is referring to is the myth that all England fans (except or pants as he is the sole owner of all understanding) assumed that qualification would be a forgone conclusion before we had ever kicked a ball in the group, and that now Israel did us a favour, the assumption is back again.

Of course, that is several miles from reality, but hey.
