What I liked about it is that he's broken down Smudger's plan

clearly into it's constituent elements:

* Meet at Smudger's usual venue, not knowing which one "Smudger" is.
* Not meet Smudger, since he's refusing the traditional accoutrements of protest, and very clearly not drawing attention to himself
* Allow Smudger his "I was there, where were you" moment
