Soccerbase has Roeder's predecessor leaving Gills on Sept 30th.
In addition Wikipedia quotes a published history of Gillingham - "Former Gillingham player Damien Richardson became the club's next manager, with veteran goalkeeper Ron Hillyard as his assistant, but the club's financial situation was poor and the pair struggled to produce results with a squad comprised of ageing journeymen and untried youngsters, and both men were sacked in September 1992,[50] with Glenn Roeder taking over as manager"
So, on that basis, when Hillyard left Gills were joint-bottom, with 7 pts from their first 9 games.
Soccerbase is pretty good, but does contain plenty of errors (take note of who wears the #24 shirt at Norwich at the mo. You will be amazed).
