The general consensus at the time was that PG wasn't a bad choice.

Ok so it's turned out bad. Doesn't mean anyone was at fault in the first place.

But like I said, even if you weed out the no-hopers from the applicants, it still takes time to interview thoroughly. And can you imagine the stick the board will get if they don't get it right this time? I don't blame them for trying to make the right choice, since so many people on here are just waiting for another reason to have a go at them.
