FAO Steve in Holland ref. Grenoble

Stendhal wrote that in Grenoble, ''at the end of every street is a mountain", and this has become the tagline for the Grenoblois tourist board. What the thick mountain folk didn't realise was that Stendhal was having a pop. It's the most claustrophobic of cities, you never see the horizon and it gets dark at 5.00. And it's really polluted, being the biggest French Alpine city.

If you're thinking about going to the mountains for Christmas then go for it - it's a nice way to get away from the s**t we get served in most modern cultures at that time of year. Grenoble airport is a good way to get to the mountains quickly, and there are plenty of fantastic resorts in the area. But stay away from Grenoble.
