The argument you've just tabled is going to happen with Lampard. His fans are going to say "look, england screwed up without him last night, but booed him saturday, it isn't his fault, and he should be back in the team"

Fact is, Lampard just hasn't played well enough to be in the England set up recently. Before Beckham's good run last season at Real, he hadn't done anything form wise to prove he should even be in the Real team
