It's only a mathematical translation after all, but without knowing the parameters of the swirl, it wouldn't be quite as straightforward as saying "run the 'unswirl' function on this pic".

No, you're right, it isn't any kind of special magic breakthough, I think most of the interest comes from the paedoe being so bloody stupid to do use his own photo swirled up in the first place, and then being foiled. Not because the machanism by which he was foiled was some breakthough.

As it happens my university dissertation was about image generation and manipulation such as that sort of thing. Linear maths and all that. Very, very many pens.
