I had a manager in my job whose first action to send out an email to his entire team, including people above them and him, accusing them of not doing enough work.

People on my team frequently heard verifiable reports of him going to other departments purely to slag them all off. As a result, all of his staff despised him and several put in very serious complaints. Like you say, morale went through the floor and the team's performance died on its arse.

The players are human beings. If their manager consistently criticises them in public even if they've just performed well (cf Barnsley, Tamworth) they're going to be angry and they're not going to perform for him. Not rocket science, is it Grant?
