I took of the afternoon from work to attend the Colchester v Norwich reserve game. Despite the appalling weather conditions with lots of surface water it was an entertaining game and unlike the first team the resreves put together lots of attacking moves. Strihavka and Brown were playing up front. Strihavka could have scored a hatrick. Brown had one chance which he emabarrassingly missed and looked no more likely to score for the reserves than he does for the first team.
Brellier was also playing. He looked laboured and disinterested and was completely off the pace even for a reserve match. If Grant bought him based upon the You Tube video he should involve Trading Standards. Brellier was to the man in that video with the flowing locks and the all action style as a carthorse is to a thoroughbred. Perhaps he ought to regrow his hair.
Chadwick was the man of the match. Always involved and a threat whenever he got possession.
The defence was OK. Of the youngsters Maclean at centreback and Lathrope in midfield looked promising. Cave- Brown was steady and probably wouldnt let the first team down if called upon to play. Halliday was Ok at reserve level but he is not our centreback answer. Eagle was - well Eagle- more sparrow than sparrowhawk but a useful left foot if given the time and space to cross ( but better than Lappin who on last night`s performance was as much use as a dead sparrow.)
Bexfield was steady at left back but to my surprise was clearly right footed. I had always thought him to be left footed. He offered nothing going forward simply because he never crossed the halfway line.
All in all the reserves were much more entertaining to watch than the first team. They at least understood that the aim of the game was to score goals and that you cant score goals without shooting and venturing in numbers into your opponent`s penalty box. I saw far more attacking play and attempts at goalform a yellow and green team in this one game than in all the first team games that I have seen this season put together.
