I'm not commenting on whether these are sensible views or not, I'm just quoting what it says in the JSB handbook.
Black people – PC. “The term ‘black’, which at one time in Britain was felt to be derogatory, now has a positive meaning as a result of the political civil liberties movement in the 1960s and 1970s. However, black is an adjective and not a noun, and should always be used with ‘person’ or ‘people’, never on its own.”
Coloured people – NPC. “The once commonly used term ‘coloured people’ is now considered offensive as it assumes the inferiority of those who are not ‘white’ by focusing on the ‘racial’ origin of people.”
People of colour – NPC. “This expression is more popular in the USA. It also implies a status based on racial (and therefore inferior) categories and so should be avoided.”
Visible minorities – NPC. “The expression ‘visible minorities’ has gained ground in the last few years as an acceptable term whose scope is wider than ‘Black’, but is itself problematic as it seems to imply the existence of invisible minorities.”
Ethnic minorities – NPC. "This expression, although in common use, defines a community by reference to ethnicity rather than minority status. The phrase “minority ethnic communities” is to be preferred."
Minority ethnics – NPC. “Reference to minority communities as ‘ethnics’ or 'minority ethnics' is a patronising expression which should certainly be avoided”
Second generation immigrants – NPC. “Expressions referring to second/third generation immigrants are exclusionary and likely to cause offence given the fact that these individuals are British citizens."
Oriental – NPC. “The term Oriental should be avoided as it is imprecise and may be considered racist or offensive”
Asian – PC. “The term ‘Asian’ may be acceptable in cases where the exact ethnic origin of the person is unknown”
South Asian – PC. “Strictly speaking, however, it would be more accurate to make a collective reference to people from the Indian sub-continent as being of ‘South Asian’ origin, so as to distinguish them from those from South Eastern Asia and from the Far East.”
So now you know.
