I haven't seen the film.
The plot just doesn't hang together in any meaningful way, it's as though McEwan started writing a period piece, got bored as it wasn't going anywhere, started writing a war novel, got bored as it had no background, then took the whole lot and mashed it together added a final chapter which attempts to place a Nabokovian sheen to the whole affair and collects his cheque.
It's the only McEwan book I've ever read and I can't say that I'm likely to rush out and pick up any more.
