A truly desperate situation

My boys

When I heard we had lost 2-0 today, I wasn't that surprised or even that downcast. Wolves is a tough place to go for any team, particularly for one that is struggling for form. What worries me is the accounts of our performance - even Grant described it as the worst performance since he took over. Sweet Jesus, in a year in which we have hit the dizzy heights of a 16th place finish and now hover above the relegation zone, I can't begin to imagine how awful we must have been today if it was indeed the worst of the lot. Christ, it's like spending a year shagging mingers and then waking up next to the ugliest of the lot.

Listening to Huckerby's interview on Radio Norfolk was utterly depressing. He seemed disinterested, detached and downbeat - which, by some accounts, was reflected in his performance today. Read between the lines - and you don't need to look very hard - and Darren was saying he was playing with a bunch of muppets who didn't know what they were doing.

Let's face it, if Huckerby's missus wasn't so in love with shopping at Roys of Wroxham, he would have left this club by now. And I don't think we should automatically assume he never will, particularly after hearing his comments today. Picture this: it's January, we are 17th in the table, playing pretty average football and just keeping our heads above water by grinding out wins at home. Huckerby's agent, despite being told where to go previously, is going to be asking Darren what on earth he is doing spending the remaining few years of his career wasting his time with a squad that isn't worth the steam off his piss. And while Hucks may still give him the line from Her Indoors that he's going nowhere, he may be tempted by the idea of one last shot at the Premiership. It's no secret he won't be playing at the same age as Dion Dublin - once his legs go, it's show over. That could be within two years. So, why not take one last punt at the big time and accept a 12-month deal with a Fulham, a Reading or a Birmingham? It's not that far in the car, we can keep the house in Norwich, I'll retire next year anyway...

It goes without saying next weekend's game against Sheffield Wednesday is of huge importance. I couldn't give a monkey's about our trip to Man City during the week. Frankly, it wouldn't bother me if we forfeited the f**king game. A win next week will settle a few nerves and put us in a more comfortable position. The implications of a defeat I do not have to explain.

So, things look decidedly grim this evening. I do not, however, see there is much we can do as supporters other than hope we see out the next few weeks out without further disaster. We have got virtually a brand new team playing for us now, and I hope and pray the recent performances are related to settling in/fitness issues rather than anything else.
