I think you are spot on, cammers

He seems to think a lot about the game, but then doesn't react well/quickly when reality differs from his blackboard.

And I also think that he over-estimates the ability of his squad to play the game his theory has asked for. So he hasn't learned to work with the limitations of the squad he's actually got.
