I don't agree about the rest though. Spear tackling can't be concealed from the ref by its very nature (and is condemned by all). Eye-gouging is very rare and is also condemned by all. General violence - well, it's a violent game. Controlled violence, but still pretty brutal. (I went to see Harlequins a few months ago and watched their pack going through a warm-up rucking drill 20 mins before kick off. I honestly thought they were going to hositalise each other. I have never SEEN such violence. And this was within the same team!) As for the dark arts in the rucks and scrums ... I do see the point you're making, but because everyone plays by the same Omerta code ("don't whinge, don't blub to the ref, be a man, just get the bastard in the next ruck") it doesn't feel hypocritical. You try to get away with what you can, but you respect all the referee's decisions, even if you think they're stupid and wrong. That's not hypocritical.
