speed v reaction time

ok so for all you budding sports scientists out there....if someone is fairly average speed wise......say 11-11.5 seconds over 100m; have you considered that one or two external factors might perhaps have an effect? Ball at the feet? See how it changes the scenario. Reaction time/speed of the mark from standing? The first five metres are crucial, I was never fast, but for some reason I had a reputation for being so. What it boiled down to was how quickly I got away. An average run might be 20 or 30 meters, if someone gets a few feet on you at the start of that it's damn hard if not impossible to make it up
