Bit late with this, as its been done & some good points and posts left, however, want to have my say!
Liverpool paid the price for not converting their 1st half superiority into a 1, possibly 2 goal lead at half time. The more the game went on, the more you could see Milan nicking a goal, tis' a rule of the game almost, dominate but fail to score and you'll pay the price-after all, we're so used to seeing that at Norwich!
IMHO, Gerrard was wasted played where he is. He needs to be an attacking midfield player; with someone like Mascherano alongside him doing the tidying up and defensive duties, Gerrard can get forward & with more guile, where he was last night, he was easily picked up-coming from deep, he isn't. How can managers (Benitez, Eriksson, McLaren?) continue to play him out of position? Anyway...
Kuyt had no support and it showed. And, actually, I don't really rate him as much as some pundits do. Crouch and Bellamy in attack last night, with Gerrard coming in from midfield would have caused Milan all sorts of problems, a combination of height, pace, and attitude! Kuyt was physical presence, end of. How easy is it for players like Nesta to cope with that?
Pennant and Zenden were heads down, run fast, don't look at what you are doing. Kewell's appearance was a joke, he played for about 15-20 minutes and looked moer knackered than anyone at the end!
At the risk of infuriating traditionalists, Carragher reminds me of Bobby Moore. He doesn't look flash because he is always in the right place at the right time, his sense of timing and tackling ability is exceptional. I do wonder why he isn't a regular for England.
My Dad and I both agreed that Kaka would do one thing in the game of note and that would lead to a goal. True to form he did. But, if Milan peaked against Man Utd and Liverpool against Barca, then we saw two weary teams last night, often out of shape and looking a bit bereft of ideas. Am glad Milan won but they, and Liverpool, are by far, NOT the best team in Europe-but then, the FA Cup winners are usually not the best team in England either.
I think, incidentally, that fate will decree that they meet again next season!
