The pre-match hype surrounding this game was more New Labour spin than big match bravado as animated Black Country manager Christopher 'Brom' Jakeman mocked Andalucía Catalunya's star man Dani Alves by claiming people would rather watch Zoltan Gera. Whilst AC legend Adam 'Nostradamus Goalstradamus' Brandonio kept himself busy and out of the spotlight after the impressive wins on the way to the final, a wise move it proved to be.
The final got underway in wet and windy conditions with promising approach play by both sides and a couple of chances fell the way of The Black Country but were fluffed first by Keogh then by Gera. The Black Country fans were buoyant but a slip in the BC defence combined with the devastating pace of Adriano put the Spaniards ahead. Adriano skipped the challenge of the lumbering Englishman and finished coolly to send the AC fans wild.
The lead was soon extended after another scintillating attack, Ivan de la Pena picked out former Manchester City flop Riera who fired home with help from a deflection beyond the despairing keeper and Brandonio was pictured gulping down a pint of lager and looking rather smug.
Jason Koumas was causing a few problems for the AC rear guard but BC were struggling to find the killer touch. Phillips, Koren and Kamara all had chances to pull a goal back before half time but the lack of class was becoming evident as the AC keeper was hardly tested. The BC keeper however was keeping his team in the game with fine saves from Raul Tamudo and Adriano.
The second half began with the English left in the dressing room tucking into their balti pies whilst the Spanish played football equal to a mouth watering Paella. Tamudo again went close and Riera nearly scored one of the great European goals, only to be denied by a fantastic tip over the bar. With Andalucía Catalunya seemingly in control they suddenly found themselves in trouble. Phillips headed home to send the Black Country fans wild. Their joy was enhanced when midfield dynamo Moises was sent off for a second bookable defence that led to AC defending their slender advantage. This was followed by further drama as AC nearly put through their own net.
However The Black Country failed to take advantage whilst the skills of Andalucía Catalunya were a joy to behold. An exhibition of football in the last twenty minutes so numerous players having the chance to extend their lead. However AC were nearly caught out as first Koren went close again and Boothroyd fired miserably over the bar. Some black country fans were pictured with tears streaming down their face but it was performance that never merited a victory. Andalucía Catalunya were accused of being arrogant by playing another 30mins of high class football, scoring a couple more goals then having a mock penalty shoot out, but it was no more than Adam Brandonio deserved as he lifted his second trophy of a magnificent season.
