When we were relegated from the Prem I said the best chance of us getting back up was in the first season. Keep our best players and stengthen ergo the much vaunted Charlton model. Instead we let a few key players go and bought in a load of under performing journeymen.
The two seasons back in the CCC have been wasted along with the parachute payments. All the benefits of being in the Prem have been squandered and we are now back where we were 10 years ago. We now find ourselves looking up the table at not only Ipswich but Colchester as well. The club has gone into an inexorable decline and the Board has neither the wit nor the guile to arrest it.
Grant will flounder around in the transfer market this summer before signing another bunch of mediocre players simply because that is all that is available to him with the funds provided. There has been a lot of speculation about outside investment but I honestly believe the club is not open to it. A new, dynamic presence on the Board would upset the cosy little private members club they have got. I would love to be proved wrong but I am not holding my breath.
Despite a new manager and new set up it is obvious the decline has not been arrested. League 1 beckons unless there is a drastic change of tack at Carrow Road. Nobody has a God given right to stay in this league - just ask Forest and Leeds. We have gone past the point of no return unless massive investment is found from somewhere.
