As a candidate explanation for what Team Trump is up to, Putin having something on him would certainly fit the bill. He is literally saying and acting in a manner entirely aligned with Putin’s own personal interests. It’s a really remarkable reverse of 80 years of diplomacy.

The other option is more mundane. Trump is just doing whatever will personally make him and his cronies the most money. Maybe he thinks Vlad will cut the Trump family into some carve up of Ukraine if he leaves it defenceless and lets Russia take it over completely. Although history tells us Vlad doesn’t often do that, and people in his orbit often fall of balconies rather than ending up being richly rewarded.
