If you really want to feel depressed about what's going on

You should read the 'Parable of the Sower'.

Written in the early 90's, it foretells a world where society has broken down and a new US President is elected who is a Christian Nationalist that privatises all social services (including the police, who become corrupt) and campaigned with the slogan of 'Make America Great Again" (I kid you not).

The book begins in 2024 and, once you read it, you can't escape the feeling that it is spookily prophetic.
