*Lingwood councillors say 'knifeman' was making Nutella roll*

Nutella usually only raises alarm bells among those counting their calories.

But a jar of the chocolate and hazelnut spread triggered a large-scale police response that gripped a Norfolk village.
The officers were called to Station Road in Lingwood after locals reported a man with a knife wandering the streets.
The man was found eating Nutella with a butter knife outside Lingwood train station.

Three police cars and an ambulance were dispatched to the village, between Acle and Norwich.

Officers then flooded the area while an unmarked police car drove along several streets in search of the knifeman.
They eventually tracked him down and discovered he was using the blade, a butter knife, to eat from a jar of Nutella on the go.

Details of the bizarre incident, which happened at around 4pm on January 29, have emerged from the Lingwood and Burlingham Parish Council, which conducted its own investigation to reassure locals.

Cheryl Grace, a councillor, said: "It was just someone trying to have his lunch on the go, literally trying to butter his roll before travelling.

"Whenever there is any social disruption, the parish council always investigate when informed, as do our community police."

However, the downplaying of the incident has sparked anger among villagers who have gone online to accuse the parish council of spreading misinformation.

Clare Gordon described the authority's account as "nonsense".

She added: "The threat this man posed was very real. He’s well-known to the police and was completely out of his mind on drugs during this incident."

Another local, Dazzer Garren, added: "It seems very strange to be having lunch around 4pm and he had no roll.
"I’m sure you would be frightened if someone was carrying a knife after you."

David Robinson, parish council chairman, said: "One of our councillors has relayed a report from a local resident who witnessed a gentleman in a less than stable state.

"He was struggling to get Nutella from a jar onto his bread, possibly a bread roll, using a knife, believed to be a butter knife or similar.

"There was certainly no evidence of the man being aggressive in this report, but the police were called and dealt with the incident.

"We were concerned to hear that some villagers were genuinely fearful during this incident. We have been informed that after investigation, no crime had been committed."
A spokeswoman for Norfolk Police confirmed that the force "found no evidence a crime had taken place".
