I think that every season I've been following football, people have said

That the standard of refereeing is poorer than it was previously.

However, I'm unsure when the golden age of refereeing was when everyone was so impressed with the standard.

I suspect there wasn't one, but naturally people tend to remember the recent errors or controversies more than the old ones.
