The split, I saw suggested

Was conservatives and socialists v libertarians and progressives (the so called) which makes sense, and cuts across party lines of course - though I think there's more to it than that (practical considerations eg)

I feel rather bleak about it still - for me it stands for something fundamentally wrong in our society
