In broad terms an algorithm is a set preset rigid computer instructions that will produce the same output for any given input. AI on the other hand has the ability to modify its own algorithms and create new algorithms in response to learned inputs. In other words AI will learn from your playing chess style and will get harder to beat the more you play against it.
