so basically it hands him victory.

Keeps Crimean, keeps Donbas basically and demilitarised zone means Ukraine loses territory and NATO stays away from his border.

Note that I doubt NATO would ever have admitted Ukraine before this war. The dance just suited both sides. A bit like the Turkey / EU saga.
