Unless you're fairly recently familiar with a town/city then I'd say definitely.

I only visited one, almost as a confirmation and it worked, but I already had friends who'd been there a year that gave me a sense of security.

I went to Sheffield and the city has changed beyond recognition in 20 years but I have kept going back.

If I had a kid going next year I wouldn't need to visit Norwich, Cambridge, Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield... I'd definitely check out other places.
